The importance of brain health awareness

Your brain is the quiet engine behind everything you think, feel and do — and yet we rarely stop to care for it the way we care for the rest of our bodies. World Brain Day, observed every year on 22 July, is a chance to change that: to raise awareness and education around the neurological conditions that affect people all over the world.

In 2024, World Brain Day was dedicated to Brain Health and Prevention. Led by the World Federation of Neurology (WFN) in collaboration across all six of its regions, the day champions a simple but powerful message — that brain health, and the steps we take to protect it, matter for everyone.

Fascinating facts about the brain

  • Your brain contains over 100 billion neurons and around 100 trillion synapses — the connections that let them communicate.
  • It uses about 20% of your body's energy, despite making up only 2% of its mass.
  • You have a unique brain "fingerprint," shaped by your own pattern of neural connections.
  • The brain can process visual information in as little as 13 milliseconds.
  • It has a natural "negativity bias," which makes us more likely to remember negative experiences than positive ones.

Brain health and wellness tips

  • Exercise regularly to improve cognitive function and reduce the risk of dementia.
  • Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats.
  • Get enough sleep — 7 to 9 hours for adults — to support brain function and memory consolidation.
  • Practise stress-reducing techniques like meditation, yoga or deep breathing.
  • Engage in mentally stimulating activities, such as reading, puzzles or learning a new skill.

Caring for your brain is caring for your mental health — the two are inseparable. If you or someone you love is struggling, you don't have to navigate it alone. Our team at Blue Iris Healthcare is here to listen, and to help, gently and in confidence.
