Dr. Olusegun O. Shoyombo

Education & training

Dr. Shoyombo studied medicine and surgery at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, between 1998 and 2005. He holds a fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, Faculty of Psychiatry (FMCPsych), and a Master’s degree in Gerontology from the University of Southampton, United Kingdom. He works as a Senior Consultant Psychiatrist at the National Hospital Abuja, the nation’s flagship hospital.

Scholarship & recognition

Dr. Shoyombo’s dedication to scholarship and research is evident in his exploration of critical topics such as psychiatric morbidity among cancer patients and attitudes towards end-of-life issues. His commitment to advancing the frontiers of knowledge is underscored by his participation in various workshops, conferences and training programmes.

In March 2018, he was invited as an International Academic Scholar to deliver a lecture to a cohort of MSc Gerontology students at the University of Southampton. That same year, he won the 2018 Ayo Binitie Award as the best candidate in the fellowship examination of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, Faculty of Psychiatry.

A career across Nigeria

Having spent his entire school years in Lagos, the practice of medicine has taken Dr. Shoyombo to different parts of the country. He did his medical housemanship at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, and his National Youth Service at General Hospital, Ringim, Jigawa State, where he was retained after service. He then worked at General Hospital, Koko, Kebbi State, before joining the Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi, where he worked for three years. Before joining the National Hospital Abuja in 2012, he worked briefly at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kaduna.

Beyond medicine

Dr. Shoyombo is keen about physical exercise and believes in the saying “what is good for your heart is good for your brain.” In his spare time, he enjoys reading and playing squash and badminton. Segun is married to Victoria, and they are blessed with two children.
